Charles Fasoldt Watch Company

Charles Fasoldt came from Dresden, Germany to Rome, New York in 1845. In 1861, he moved to Albany, New York where he set up a factory to make watches, clocks and other instruments. This extremely famous horologist patented chronometer escapement with a coaxial double escape wheel in 1859 and 1865, he also patented a unique watch regulator in 1864 and a hair spring stud in 1877. Fasoldt demonstrated the superior reliability of his double coaxial double escape wheel by strapping on to his watches along with other watches to the drive rod of the Empire Express locomotive. The locomotive's round trip run from Albany to New York proved his point, all the other watches stopped shortly after the train started but the Fasoldt's watch made the entire trip running and was within a few minutes of the correct time. This unique coaxial double escape wheel is designed to eliminate the use of oil at the escapement and prevent overbanking. Each watch he produced had minor variations, therefore, no two watches are alike. These masterpieces originally sold for about three hundred dollars. Fasoldt made less than four hundred watches in Albany, New York and approximately fifty watches in Rome, New York. They are extremely rare and a very important part of American horology.

#143. BRONNIKOV VERY RARE & FINE WOODEN WATCH WITH ORIGINAL CHAIN, KEY & CASE

49mm Open-Face Keywind/Keyset, C. 1850s

This presentation of this very special piece is a fitting way to end the pocket watch section of this renowned collection. Watches such as this wooden example are extremely rare and almost never offered for private sale. This superior example piece features a near mint hinged back birch wood case which is signed inside the back cover. When the back is open, you can view an amazing work of art. The movement consists of birch box and dogwood parts. The gear train is entirely of wood as is the cylinder escape wheel and the balance wheel. A bone click and screw are featured along with a steel hair spring. The movement carries a wooden hour and minute gears which can be viewed at the center of the dial along with wood open work hands. The Arabic numerals are marked on circular bone discs which are recessed into the wood front plate. The timepiece comes with the original wood link chain which measures 15" in length. The chain is carved from a continuous piece of wood and it culminates with a carved wood winding key. The timepiece comes in the original fitted and carved wood box. This extremely rare timepiece is the work of "Bronnikov" which was a family living in Vjatka Russia which specialized in all wood and all ivory watches. The family has a wonderful history, the first known member producing watches was Ivan Bronnikov C. 1770-1880. Once for an exhibition in 1837, the Vjatka industrial town council requested that Ivan exhibit some of his objects, he refused saying he was too old but that his son, Semyon Ivanovitch (1800-1875) would exhibit some "small thing," this turned out to be a pocket watch carved out of wood which astounded everyone in attendance. It is rumored that the future Czar, Alexander the II purchased this watch, this encouraged Semyon to continue in the manufacture of wooden ivory watches. This gentleman had seven sons, among them, Mikhail, Semyonovitch, Nicolai, Semyonovitch who continued to produce interesting watches such as the one for sale here. The rarity of these watches is reinforced with the fact that watches from this maker are part of the collections of the Moscow Cremlin Armory and the Hermitage as well as the Moscow Clock Industry Research Institute & the Tbilisi Museum of People's Art as well as the Physics & Math Salon of Desdon. This museum quality piece was featured on the cover of the "Complete Price Guide to Watches" edition No. 23 in the year 2003. It is extremely special and Ashland is proud to present it to its clientele. $12,050.00
